No one, during the 1930s or since, has or ever will deny Coughlin’s anti-Semitic words and actions polluted his politics towards the end of his radio career. Coughlin’s anti-Semitic nature (which he denied the rest of his life) began to appear following the 1936 Presidential Election and were abundantly clear by the summer of 1938. The question that remains and is continually asked is whether or not Coughlin’s anti-Semitism started before 1936 or whether it was a creation of the circumstances he found himself in following his devastating defeat. Using broadcasts concerning controversial issues and those that received much criticism and praise, from before 1936 and after 1936, I will point out the subtle hints of anti-Semitism in broadcasts before 1936 and the quick increase in its use and lack of care taken to disguise it after 1936 and into 1939.
